Warning!

If you’re experiencing symptoms, we always recommend you seek in-person medical care and not rely on an at home test. If you’ve been exposed to someone with an STI, it’s important to seek in-person medical care right away. At home tests are not appropriate in this case.

What are these STIs anyway?

Click on the infections to learn more about their causes, treatments and more…

Chlamydia
  • A bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Spread through contact with infected sexual fluids, most commonly from unprotected vaginal and anal sex
  • Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms
  • There can be potentially serious complications from untreated infections, particularly for women
  • Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs and can infect anyone who is sexually active
  • Chlamydia can be cured with antibiotics
Gonorrhea
  • A bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Spread through contact with infected sexual fluids, most commonly from unprotected vaginal, anal, and oral sex
  • Up to half people with gonorrhea have no symptoms
  • When symptoms do occur, they may include a burning sensation while urinating and abnormal discharge
  • Gonorrhea can be cured with antibiotics
  • Gonorrhea is one of the most common STIs and can infect anyone who is sexually active
HIV
  • HIV is short for human immunodeficiency virus
  • Spread through contact with infected sexual fluids, most commonly from unprotected vaginal and anal sex
  • In the first weeks after infection, a person may experience symptoms similar to the flu, but once these symptoms pass, someone with HIV usually has no symptoms for many years though they are still able to transmit the infection
  • HIV is treated with Antiretroviral therapy (ART)
  • Anyone who is sexually active can contract HIV, but people having anal sex are most at risk
  • Medical studies show taking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PreP) daily can lower the risk of contracting HIV by more than 90%
Trichomoniasis
  • A parasitic infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis
  • Spread through contact with infected sexual fluids, most commonly from unprotected vaginal, anal, and oral sex
  • About 7 out of 10 people with Trich have no signs of the infection
  • When symptoms do occur, they may include vaginitis (irritation of the vulva or vagina), or painful urination
  • Trich can be cured with antibiotics
  • Trich is the most common STI and can infect anyone who is sexually active, but vaginas are particularly susceptible to infection

Did you know...

While there are ways to reduce your risk, no method is 100% effective at stopping transmission of STIs. Even if you’ve been treated for an STI in the past, it’s possible to get some of these infections more than once, so it’s important to continue to test regularly!
